Overview

Expert Guidance for Every Reclaimed Wood Project

Reclaimed lumber is not a commodity product. Every lot is unique, and choosing the wrong species, grade, or dimension can derail a project in terms of both budget and timeline. Our consultation service connects you with specialists who have over 40 combined years of hands-on experience evaluating, grading, processing, and installing reclaimed wood across hundreds of projects in the Northeast.

Whether you are an architect specifying materials for a historic renovation, a contractor planning a commercial fit-out with reclaimed finishes, a homeowner designing your first accent wall, or a sustainability manager documenting environmental impact for LEED certification, our consultation team provides the expertise you need to make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes.

We offer four types of consultation — design, structural, sustainability, and compliance — each tailored to the specific needs of your project. Initial phone and video consultations are always complimentary, and in-person sessions at our Medford facility are free of charge. On-site project visits are available at competitive rates and are often credited toward your material purchase.

Consultation Types

Four Areas of Expertise

Our consultation services cover four distinct areas. Most projects benefit from a combination of these — our specialists seamlessly blend expertise across all four as needed.

Type 1

Design Consultation

Our design consultation helps architects, interior designers, and homeowners select the right reclaimed materials for aesthetic-driven projects. We guide you through species selection based on color, grain pattern, and character level. We discuss surface treatment options — from rough-sawn barn board with full patina to skip-planed surfaces that preserve partial character, to fully surfaced and sanded boards for a clean, refined look.

We also advise on dimensional planning for visual impact. For accent walls, we discuss board width variation, pattern layouts (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, herringbone), and how to mix widths and textures for depth. For flooring, we cover width options, random-length versus fixed-length installations, and color grading strategies that produce the desired overall appearance.

Design consultations often include sample board selection. We pull examples from inventory that match your design intent, so you can evaluate color, grain, and character in person or via high-resolution photos before committing to a full order.

What Is Included

  • Species selection guidance (color, grain, character)
  • Surface treatment recommendations
  • Dimensional planning for visual impact
  • Layout and pattern consultation
  • Sample board selection and review
  • Material mood boards and photo documentation
  • Finish and sealer recommendations
  • Budget alternatives at different price points
Type 2

Structural Consultation

When reclaimed lumber is being used for structural applications — exposed beams, post-and-beam framing, load-bearing timbers, or structural floor systems — material selection becomes an engineering question, not just an aesthetic one. Our structural consultation evaluates load requirements, span tables, species properties, and grading standards to ensure the reclaimed material you select is structurally adequate for its intended use.

Old-growth reclaimed timber is often denser and stronger than modern plantation-grown wood because it grew slowly over decades or centuries, producing tighter growth rings and higher structural density. However, reclaimed material may also have hidden defects — internal checks, rot pockets, or compromised fibers from decades of load-bearing service — that affect its structural capacity. Our grading specialists evaluate each piece individually for these factors.

We work with your architect or structural engineer to provide the species identification, structural grade assessments, and material data they need to spec reclaimed timber with confidence. For projects that require formal structural grading, we can arrange third-party inspection and certification through certified lumber grading agencies.

What Is Included

  • Species identification and density assessment
  • Visual structural grading per NELMA standards
  • Moisture content evaluation for structural stability
  • Defect assessment (checks, splits, rot, wane)
  • Load capacity guidance based on species and grade
  • Span table consultation for beams and joists
  • Coordination with structural engineers
  • Third-party grading referral when required
Type 3

Sustainability Consultation

For projects pursuing LEED certification, corporate sustainability goals, or simply wanting to document the environmental impact of their material choices, our sustainability consultation provides the data, documentation, and strategic guidance you need. We help you understand which LEED credits apply to reclaimed lumber, what documentation is required, and how to maximize the sustainability impact of your material selections.

We provide chain-of-custody documentation that traces every board from its salvage origin through our processing facility to your project. We document salvage source type (barn, factory, warehouse, residential), geographic origin, estimated age of the original structure, and processing history. This documentation supports LEED MR credits for materials reuse and contributes to MR Credit 3 (Materials Reuse) and potentially MR Credit 5 (Regional Materials) depending on salvage origin.

We also calculate and report environmental impact metrics: board feet diverted from landfill, equivalent trees preserved, estimated CO2 offset, and water savings compared to virgin lumber production. These metrics are formatted for inclusion in corporate sustainability reports, investor ESG disclosures, and marketing materials.

What Is Included

  • LEED credit identification and strategy
  • Chain-of-custody documentation
  • Salvage origin records with source details
  • Environmental impact calculations
  • CO2 offset and tree preservation metrics
  • Corporate sustainability report formatting
  • ESG disclosure support data
  • Green building certification guidance
Type 4

Compliance Consultation

Using reclaimed lumber in construction projects sometimes raises regulatory questions around building codes, fire ratings, historic preservation standards, and material safety. Our compliance consultation helps you navigate these requirements so your project passes inspection without surprises.

For historic properties on the National Register or subject to local preservation ordinances, we help identify period-appropriate species and dimensions that satisfy preservation review requirements. We understand the difference between rehabilitation and restoration standards under the Secretary of the Interior guidelines and can advise on material selections that meet the applicable standard for your project.

For commercial and multi-family projects, we help you understand how reclaimed lumber fits within International Building Code (IBC) requirements for fire rating, structural capacity, and material testing. We can provide documentation of kiln drying temperatures (for pest treatment compliance), moisture content certification (for building code moisture requirements), and species identification for structural calculations.

What Is Included

  • Building code compliance guidance (IBC)
  • Fire rating considerations for reclaimed wood
  • Historic preservation standards (SOI Guidelines)
  • Period-appropriate species identification
  • Pest treatment documentation (kiln temperatures)
  • Moisture content certification
  • Material safety data and testing referrals
  • Inspector and reviewer coordination support

These real-world examples show how our consultation service adds value at every stage of a project, from initial concept through material delivery and installation support.

Design + Sustainability

Boutique Hotel Lobby, Back Bay

An architecture firm designing a boutique hotel lobby wanted reclaimed wood feature walls but was unsure about species selection, fire rating requirements, and LEED documentation. Our design specialist recommended skip-planed reclaimed white oak for its warm color and Class C fire rating when treated. Our sustainability specialist provided chain-of-custody documentation that contributed to two LEED MR credits. Total consultation saved the firm an estimated three weeks of independent material research.

Compliance + Structural

Federal-Era Townhouse, Beacon Hill

A restoration contractor needed to replace deteriorated floor joists and subfloor in a 1790s townhouse on the National Register. Our compliance specialist identified appropriate period species (eastern white pine for subfloor, white oak for visible elements) and dimensions that would pass preservation review. Our structural specialist graded replacement beams for load-bearing adequacy. The project passed both historic review and structural inspection on first submission.

Client Feedback

What Clients Say About Our Consultations

The consultation alone was worth more than what we paid for it. Their design specialist helped us choose the right species for a restaurant accent wall, showed us samples we never would have found on our own, and provided a detailed cost breakdown at three different quality levels. We ended up spending less than our original budget because they found a better species match at a lower price point.

Amanda Liu

Interior Designer, Liu Design Group, Boston

We needed LEED documentation for a corporate office renovation using reclaimed wood. Boston Lumber not only provided the chain-of-custody records but also helped us understand which credits applied and how to format the documentation for our LEED reviewer. That level of sustainability expertise is rare in a lumber company.

Daniel Okafor

Sustainability Director, GreenPath Consulting

As a furniture maker, I need to know exactly what I am working with. Their specialist walked me through the entire inventory, identified the best pieces for my project, and warned me about species-specific challenges I would not have anticipated. That kind of practical, hands-on knowledge is invaluable.

Maria Santos

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about our consultation services. If your question is not listed, email us at info@boston-lumber.com.

Is reclaimed lumber strong enough for structural use?

In most cases, yes. Old-growth reclaimed timber is denser and stronger than modern plantation-grown wood. We grade every piece for structural integrity and can provide engineering data when required.

How much does reclaimed lumber cost compared to new?

It varies by species and grade. Common dimensional stock can be comparable to new prices, while specialty species like heart pine or chestnut carry a premium. We provide budget options at multiple price points.

Can I use reclaimed wood outdoors?

Species like cypress, white oak, and cedar have natural rot resistance that makes them excellent for exterior use. We recommend finishes and maintenance suited to your climate and application.

Is reclaimed wood safe? What about lead paint?

We reject boards with lead paint, creosote, or chemical treatments. Kiln drying eliminates insects and mold. Compliance consultations include safety documentation for your records.

How far in advance should I order?

Standard species and dimensions typically need one to two weeks. Specialty species, custom milling, or large volumes benefit from four to six weeks of lead time.

Do I need a consultation, or can I just place an order?

You can order directly. If you are new to reclaimed lumber or have LEED, design-critical, or structural questions, a consultation saves time and reduces rework.

Is the consultation fee credited toward my order?

Phone and video consultations are complimentary. On-site visit fees are credited toward material purchases over $5,000.

Can you help with projects outside New England?

Yes. Phone and video consultations are available anywhere. On-site visits outside our primary area include travel costs; we regularly support projects along the East Coast.

How long does a typical consultation take?

Phone and video sessions run 30–60 minutes; facility visits take 1–2 hours; on-site visits are typically a half day. Complex projects may need multiple sessions.

Will I receive a written report after my consultation?

Yes. You receive a written summary with species recommendations, quantities, processing specs, budget ranges, timelines, and next steps.
