Deep Dive

Detailed Service Overviews

Each of our four services has been refined over years of experience in the reclaimed lumber industry. Below is a deeper look at what each one involves, who benefits most, and how they work together.

Buying & Selling Reclaimed Lumber

Our buying and selling operation sits at the heart of everything we do. We maintain one of the deepest reclaimed lumber inventories in the Northeast, typically holding over 200,000 board feet across dozens of species and dimensions. Whether you are a contractor looking to source 10,000 board feet of reclaimed oak for a restaurant build-out, or a homeowner searching for a few hundred board feet of heart pine for a mantel project, we have the inventory depth and sourcing network to fill your order.

On the selling side, we purchase reclaimed lumber from demolition contractors, renovation teams, estate managers, and individuals across the entire eastern seaboard. Our grading specialists evaluate every lot on-site, provide a transparent offer, and handle all pickup logistics with our own fleet. We buy barn timber, industrial lumber, demolition salvage, surplus stock, flooring, decking, and specialty old-growth species including American chestnut, heart pine, and virgin cypress.

Every transaction is backed by transparent, market-based pricing. We provide detailed, line-item quotes that show exactly how your price is calculated, and volume discounts apply automatically for orders above 5,000 board feet. Net-30 terms are available for approved commercial accounts.

Lumber Processing Services

Raw reclaimed lumber is rarely ready to use straight off the salvage truck. It arrives loaded with embedded nails, inconsistent moisture levels, weathered surfaces, and irregular dimensions. Our processing facility transforms that raw material into finished, ready-to-install lumber that meets professional standards for any application from structural framing to fine furniture.

Our processing pipeline includes six core services: de-nailing and metal removal, planing and surfacing, kiln drying, resawing, custom dimensioning, and tongue-and-groove milling. Each service can be ordered individually or combined into a full processing package. We process material from our own inventory as well as customer-supplied lumber, so even if you source your reclaimed wood elsewhere, you can still take advantage of our industrial-grade equipment and experienced operators.

Our facility processes over 60,000 board feet per month. We operate a 5,000 board-foot capacity commercial kiln, a 36-inch wide-belt planer, a 42-inch bandsaw resaw, and a four-head moulder for profile milling. Every piece passes through our conveyor-fed metal detector before any machining begins, protecting both our equipment and your finished product.

Transportation & Delivery

Unlike most reclaimed lumber companies that rely on third-party freight carriers, we built our own transportation fleet from day one. That decision gives us complete control over scheduling, handling, and accountability for every load we move. Our drivers are trained specifically for lumber loads and know how to stack, strap, and protect reclaimed material, especially finished pieces that cannot afford transit damage.

Our fleet includes flatbed trucks capable of carrying up to 20,000 board feet, enclosed box trucks for weather-sensitive or finished material up to 8,000 board feet, and pickup-and-trailer rigs for small local deliveries up to 2,000 board feet. We match the vehicle to your order size and delivery location so you are never paying for more truck than you need.

We deliver throughout Greater Boston with same-day and next-day options, across all of Massachusetts on regular scheduled routes, throughout New England on weekly runs, and to the Tri-State area and Mid-Atlantic on bi-weekly schedules. For destinations beyond our direct service area, we coordinate with trusted carrier partners to reach anywhere in the continental United States.

Expert Consultation

Reclaimed lumber is not a commodity product. Every lot is unique, and choosing the wrong species, grade, or dimension can derail a project in terms of both budget and timeline. Our consultation service connects you with specialists who have over 40 combined years of hands-on experience evaluating, grading, processing, and installing reclaimed wood across hundreds of projects.

A consultation covers everything from species and grade selection to quantity planning, feasibility assessment, budget estimation, sustainability documentation, and installation guidance. We offer phone and video consultations at no charge for initial project discussions, complimentary in-person sessions at our Medford facility where you can see inventory firsthand, and on-site project visits for jobs that require field evaluation.

We work with architects, designers, general contractors, homeowners, historic restoration teams, sustainability managers, and furniture makers. Whether you have a fully developed plan that needs material specifications or just a rough idea that needs shaping, our consultation team turns your vision into a concrete, actionable material plan.

What Our Clients Say

Customer Testimonials

We sourced over 8,000 board feet of reclaimed oak from Boston Lumber for a restaurant renovation in Cambridge. From consultation to delivery, they handled everything. The material was perfectly graded, kiln-dried, and delivered on schedule. We have used them on three projects since.

Michael Torres

Project Manager, Torres Construction

As an architect specializing in historic restoration, finding period-appropriate materials is critical. Boston Lumber not only had the heart pine we needed but also consulted on species matching and provided full chain-of-custody documentation for our preservation review.

Sarah Chen

Principal Architect, Chen & Associates

I was a first-time buyer of reclaimed wood for an accent wall in my home. The consultation team walked me through every option, helped me pick the right species, and even advised on installation. The result is stunning and I saved money compared to buying new exotic hardwood.

David Moretti

Homeowner, Somerville, MA

Environmental Impact

The Sustainability Behind Every Service

Every service we offer contributes to a measurable environmental benefit. Reclaimed lumber reduces landfill waste, preserves standing forests, and lowers the carbon footprint of construction projects. Here is how the numbers stack up across our operation.

94%

Landfill Diversion Rate

Of all material that enters our facility, 94% is either resold as lumber, repurposed as mulch or bedding, or recycled as scrap metal.

2,800+

Trees Preserved Annually

Every board foot of reclaimed lumber used is a board foot of new timber that does not need to be harvested from standing forests.

720,000+

BF Processed Per Year

Over 720,000 board feet of reclaimed lumber processed annually, keeping viable material out of demolition waste streams.

1,400+

Tons CO2 Offset

By diverting lumber from landfills and reducing demand for new timber, our operation offsets an estimated 1,400+ tons of CO2 annually.

Zero-Waste Processing Philosophy

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond just reclaiming lumber. Our processing facility operates on a zero-waste philosophy where every byproduct is repurposed. Sawdust and shavings from our planer and resaw are collected and distributed as animal bedding and garden mulch. Metal removed during de-nailing is sorted and sent to metal recyclers. Off-cuts too small for lumber are bundled as kindling or sold to artisan makers for small craft projects.

We track and report environmental impact data for every order, so our clients can include verified sustainability metrics in their LEED submissions, corporate sustainability reports, and project documentation. This is not greenwashing — it is real, measurable environmental impact backed by transparent data.

How do I get started? What information do you need from me?

Start by submitting a quote request through our website or emailing info@boston-lumber.com. Include your project type, species preferences, approximate quantity, desired dimensions, timeline, and delivery location so we can respond quickly.

Can I use just one of your services, or do I have to use all of them?

Every service is available individually. You can buy lumber without processing, process your own material, book transportation only, or schedule a standalone consultation. Bundling services can save time and money.

What species of reclaimed lumber do you carry?

We stock 50+ species including eastern white pine, red and white oak, Douglas fir, heart pine, cypress, chestnut, walnut, and specialty lots. If it is not in stock, we can usually source within one to two weeks.

For in-stock material needing standard processing, typical turnaround is 5-7 business days from order confirmation. Rush processing in 2-3 business days is available for an additional fee.
