Accessory Categories

We stock over 80 accessories and hardware products specifically selected for compatibility with reclaimed lumber. Dense old-growth wood and aged timber have unique requirements — generic big-box products often fall short. Everything we carry has been tested on reclaimed wood in our own shop.

Specialty Fasteners

Reclaimed wood demands the right fasteners. Dense, seasoned old-growth lumber splits easily with standard fasteners designed for soft modern lumber. Our selection includes cut nails, square-head lag bolts, hand-forged nails, stainless steel screws, and specialty flooring cleats — all engineered for hard, aged wood. Using the correct fastener prevents splitting, ensures long-term hold in seasoned hardwoods, and preserves the aesthetic integrity of your reclaimed wood project.

Cut nails (2" - 6") — wrought-iron style
Square-head lag bolts (1/4" - 3/4" diameter)
Hand-forged rose-head nails (decorative)
Stainless steel trim screws (1" - 3")
GRK R4 structural screws (1" - 6")
GRK Climatek coated screws (exterior)
Concealed flooring cleats (16-gauge)
Flooring staples (15.5-gauge)
Timber-frame pegs (oak, 3/4" - 1")
Decorative bolt caps (black iron)

Eco-Friendly Finishes

We stock finishes specifically selected for compatibility with reclaimed lumber. Low-VOC and zero-VOC options that enhance the natural patina of aged wood without overpowering its character. Our finish selection prioritizes products that penetrate and bond with the wood fiber rather than building up a plastic film on the surface. Penetrating finishes look and feel more natural, are easier to maintain, and allow the wood to breathe — all important factors when working with century-old reclaimed material.

Stay Safe

Safety Considerations

Working with reclaimed wood is rewarding, but it requires awareness of unique hazards not present with new lumber. Review these safety considerations before starting your project.

01

Hidden Metal Hazard

Reclaimed lumber frequently contains embedded nails, screws, wire, and other metal objects that may not be visible on the surface. Always scan boards with a metal detector or rare-earth magnet before cutting with power tools. Contact with hidden metal can shatter saw blades and create dangerous projectiles. We de-nail all our lumber, but residual fragments may remain.

02

Dust Control

Sanding and cutting reclaimed wood generates fine dust that may contain aged finishes, mineral deposits, and tannin particles. Always wear a NIOSH-rated N95 or P100 respirator when generating dust from reclaimed wood. Use dust collection on all power tools and work in well-ventilated areas. Lead-based paint was common on pre-1978 structures — if you suspect any boards may have had painted surfaces, test for lead before processing.

03

Chemical Exposure

Some reclaimed wood — particularly from industrial buildings — may have been exposed to oils, solvents, or preservatives during its service life. While decades of weathering and off-gassing have eliminated most volatile compounds, exercise caution with wood from unknown sources. Our reclaimed lumber is sourced from structures with known histories, and we exclude any material from chemically treated or contaminated environments.

04

Sharp Edges and Splinters

Reclaimed wood, especially rough-sawn and barn board material, has sharp edges, protruding fibers, and splinter-prone surfaces. Wear heavy leather gloves when handling rough reclaimed lumber. Sand or ease sharp edges before installation in living spaces, especially in homes with children or pets.

05

Proper Lifting Technique

Reclaimed lumber, particularly beams and thick planks, can be extremely heavy. Old-growth white oak weighs nearly 4 pounds per board foot. A 12-foot 8x8 white oak beam weighs over 300 pounds. Always use proper lifting technique, adequate crew size, and mechanical lifting aids (dollies, forklifts, hoists) for heavy material. Never attempt to lift heavy beams alone.

Pro Tips

Working with Reclaimed Wood

Reclaimed lumber is rewarding to work with, but it has unique characteristics. Here are tips from our team to ensure your project goes smoothly.

01

Always Check for Metal

Even de-nailed reclaimed lumber can contain hidden nails, staples, or wire fragments. Scan every board with a metal detector or rare-earth magnet before cutting. One hidden nail can destroy an expensive carbide blade in an instant.

02

Pre-Drill Everything

Old-growth hardwoods are dense and brittle. Pre-drilling prevents splitting and ensures screws seat properly without stripping. Use a countersink bit for a clean finished appearance.

03

Acclimate Before Installing

Allow reclaimed lumber to sit in the installation environment for 5-7 days minimum. This lets the wood equalize with ambient humidity and reduces post-installation movement.

04

Use Sharp Blades

Dense, seasoned reclaimed wood dulls blades faster than new lumber. Use carbide-tipped saw blades and sharpen or replace more frequently. A dull blade generates more heat, more tear-out, and more dangerous kickback.

05

Choose Compatible Finishes

Penetrating oil finishes bond better with aged wood fibers than film-forming polyurethanes. They also allow easier spot repairs and maintain the natural look and feel of reclaimed wood.

06

Embrace the Character

Nail holes, saw marks, and color variation are features, not defects. Lean into the character rather than trying to hide it. The most successful reclaimed wood projects celebrate these unique qualities.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which finish do you recommend for reclaimed flooring?

For most reclaimed flooring projects, we recommend Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C. It is a single-coat, zero-VOC hardwax oil that bonds molecularly with the wood fiber, creating a durable, natural-looking finish that is spot-repairable without full re-sanding. If you prefer a film finish with maximum durability, water-based polyurethane is our recommendation. We offer free finish samples so you can compare options on your specific wood before committing.

Do I need to pre-drill when screwing into reclaimed wood?

It depends on the species and the fastener. GRK R4 screws are self-drilling and can be driven into most reclaimed softwoods (Douglas fir, hemlock, cypress) without pre-drilling. For dense hardwoods like white oak, red oak, and heart pine, pre-drilling is strongly recommended to prevent splitting and to ensure the screw seats fully. Always pre-drill when working within 2 inches of a board edge or end.

What adhesive should I use for glue-down flooring?

Bona R850 is our top recommendation for glue-down reclaimed flooring. It is a zero-solvent polyurethane adhesive that provides a tenacious bond, maintains flexibility for wood movement, and acts as a moisture barrier. For smaller projects or repairs, Bona R848 (4-gallon pail) is the same product in a more manageable size. Do not use water-based adhesives for solid wood flooring, as the water content can cause raised grain and swelling.

Can I use regular hardware store finishes on reclaimed wood?

You can, but we recommend against it for most applications. Generic hardware store finishes are formulated for new wood with consistent porosity and moisture content. Reclaimed wood has variable porosity (due to age and previous exposure), different moisture content profiles, and surface characteristics that can cause adhesion problems with standard finishes. The products we stock have been tested and proven on reclaimed wood specifically.

What is the difference between cut nails and wire nails?

Cut nails are stamped from flat steel plate, creating a tapered rectangular cross-section. They were the standard fastener in American construction from the late 1700s through the late 1800s. Wire nails (the standard round nails used today) replaced cut nails in the early 1900s. Cut nails hold better in hardwood, resist withdrawal more effectively, and provide a period-appropriate aesthetic for reclaimed wood projects. We stock cut nails in 2" through 6" lengths.

Do you sell beam mounting hardware for different beam sizes?

Yes. We stock concealed beam brackets, decorative straps, and through-bolt kits sized for standard timber dimensions from 4x4 through 12x12. For beams larger than 12x12 or non-standard sizes, we can source custom fabricated hardware or recommend a local metal fabricator. All our beam hardware is rated for the weight of solid timber beams in the corresponding size.

How do I choose the right grit sandpaper for my project?

Start with a grit that matches the condition of your wood surface. Rough, unplaned reclaimed wood: start at 36-60 grit. Planed reclaimed wood with minor imperfections: start at 80 grit. Smooth surfaces needing light prep before finish: start at 120 grit. Between finish coats: 220-320 grit or steel wool 0000. Always sand through successive grits — never skip more than one grit level (e.g., go from 80 to 120 to 180, not from 80 to 220).

Can I bundle accessories with a lumber order for combined shipping?

Absolutely. We encourage customers to add accessories, finishes, and hardware to their lumber orders for combined delivery. This saves on shipping costs and ensures you have everything you need when your material arrives. Note any accessories you need on your quote request and we will include them in your order total.
